Industrial Design (1)

07/04/2023 (Post 1)

For my first post of the day, I decided to research a new (to me) graphic designer, Alvin Lustig. Alvin was best known for his book cover designs. He went to school to study graphic design and even received an award for his work. His life and career were unfortunately cut short due to diabetes and an unknown kidney disease and passed away at the age of 40. More information about Alvin Lustig can be found in the main source at the end of the article.

This book cover design for Industrial Design is an example of Early Modern design because even though this cover was created in the 1950s, the proportions for this cover exist as if this was created in the Early Modernist movement. Each slice for each of the images is exactly the same size, which is an important characteristic of this movement.

Industrial Design is important to Early Modernism because the viewer can see that this design includes primary colors, photographs, and a small amount of sans-serif typography (1). These characteristics alone can show that a good amount of graphic design out in the world is under Early Modernist "guidelines".
