In the Spring

07/03/2023 (Post 1)

To start my first post off for today, I decided to research a group of graphic designers, Vladimir and Georgii Stenberg. Vladimir and Georgii are brothers and decided to work on designs together throughout their whole careers. They were both born in Russia. Vladimir is older than Georgii by a little over a year. According to the source article, "Between 1912 and 1917 they attended the Stroganov School of Arts and Crafts, Moscow, and then continued their education at the Moscow Free Studios (Svomas). With other students they designed propaganda posters and decorations for the first May Day celebrations in 1918. In 1919 the Stenbergs were founding members of the Society of Young Artists known as obmokhu, and contributed to the group's first exhibition in Moscow in May 1919, and subsequent exhibitions in 1920, 1921, and 1923." More information about the Stenberg brothers can be found in the source link at the end of this article.

This poster designed by the Stenberg brothers is called In The Spring, it was created in 1929. This poster can be an example of Early Modern Design because of the use of a total of three photographs. Also, because of the bold sans-serif typeface that is being used. These are the main characteristics being seen when it comes to Early Modern design. As I have mentioned numerous times, early modern designs include photographs, (generally) sans-serif fonts, and a clean approach with proportional shapes.

In The Spring is important to the Early Modern design movement because the poster was created near the end of the movement. It also seems like the Stenberg brothers have been experimenting with different ideas, for example, the photograph of the woman jumping at the top is generally not really well known (at least at the beginning of the movement). Designers are beginning to think outside the box when it comes to different layout ideas to catch the audience's attention.
