Staatliches Bauhaus

06/16/2023 (Post 3)

My final example for graphic design by Herbert Bayer is a piece called Staatliches Bauhaus (translated: State Bauhaus). This example is a little different compared to the other designs that I mentioned, but I feel that this is still an example of Early Modern Design. There are multiple reasons behind this statement. First, Bayer uses only capital letters in this design, which is the complete opposite of my first post (The New Typography). Also, Bayer is thinking outside the box compared to the "normal" or "expected" works of society. He does this by using two different colors within several groups of letters and numbers. I feel that this color choice brings emphasis to the information in a unique way. Most of the time, I would see the two colors but used with one whole word or set of numbers. For example, I would normally see a blue "1919" or a red "1923".

State Bauhaus is important to the Early Modern Design Movement because of the boldness of the text (sans-serif) that Bayer uses, and being that this design is meant to be a book cover, it is important to make the information stand out so that people can purchase the book with interest in mind.
