Radio
06/22/2023 (Post 1)
For my first post, I will be discussing work from a previous graphic designer from this blog, Lester Beall. Information about his life and career can be found in the source at the end of this article.
This is a poster design called Radio. It was created in 1937 for the Rural Electrification Administration, it is also part of a poster series all relating to this company. Some facts about the company is that it was "founded in 1935 by President Theodore Roosevelt" (information can be found under the image information). Radio is an example of Early Modern design because of the clean design choice in the background, which also gives a geometric view on something that is normally seen as realistic (ex: in a photograph). Also, because of the bulky arrows that point to the black and white house on the hill. This design has the blocky approach that most designers chose to work with around this time period in history.
Radio is important to Early Modernism because at the time that this poster series was created, this was a period of history where designers were beginning to think of innovative and creative ways to bring advertisements or art to life. Modernism is about experimenting with different ideas to see what is "in" at this very moment.
