Pirelli

For my graphic designer of choice for today, I will be discussing research for the work created by Alan Fletcher. Alan was born in Kenya but moved with his family to England when he was just five years old. Later on in his life, after he went to school for design for a number of years, he became known as the father of graphic design in England. He eventually also became a part of several groups/design firms with other graphic designers. He also wrote a number of books about his knowledge of graphic design (all of this information can be found in the source at the end of this article).
The example above is a Pirelli tire advertisement that was created in 1961 by Fletcher. This design is an example of Early Modernism because the bus itself looks like it came from a photograph, along with the people inside. While the work was created in the 1960s, Flecter uses principles of Early Modernism to portray a professional look to attract attention so that people can purchase tires for their vehicles.
Pirelli's Tires is important to the Early Modern Design Movement because this advertisement really brings out photography, which was something new to Early Modernism at the time. Also, most of the designs that I have researched before would only have one or two smaller photographs to include their designs. In this case, photography takes up most, if not all, of the design itself. Being that Early Modernism was considered new and experimental, photography was being used in an experimental way, by taking up most of the space involved with the work.
