NeXT
06/20/2023 (Post 2)
My second and final post of the day is of another logo design created by Paul Rand. Some information about Rand and his career can be found on my previous post, along with the source.
This is a logo for NeXT, a company based on computers. This company was actually founded by Steve Jobs. According to the article/blog that I found this image from (can be found under image information), it explains that "Rand was 72 when he designed the NeXT logo. He billed Jobs $100,000." This NeXT logo is an example of Early Modern design because of the simplicity that is demonstrated through the shapes, typography, and choice of colors involved. As I said in my previous post, that just because this design was created in the 1980s, that doesn't mean that Rand had some influence from other graphic designers around the Early Modern design movement.
NeXT is important to Early Modernism because of the clean, geometric shapes that the box includes to contain the word "NeXT". Also, because computers were beginning to be invented around the time period that the logo was created, so this was a time of new and exciting technology. Just like in the 1920s and 1930s, design was created to be new and exciting for the audience to capture their attention to. Whether it would be from an advertisement, poster, new book, etc.
