Form 53

06/16/2023 (Post 4)

For my second graphic designer for today, I picked Otto "Otl" Aicher. Otl was a German typographer and graphic designer, and the designs he is most well known for were for the 1972 Olympics in Munich (I will be discussing one of those designs in my next post). After going through WWI and WWII, he decided to get his education in graphic design (all of this information can be found in the source at the end of this article).

Form 53 is an example of Early Modern Design because of geometric shapes that are created through the grid that is being displayed on the design's background. Also, because Aicher explores the use of illustration and photography (the first two objects being illustrations and the third being a photograph).

This design is important to Early Modernism because this design was created before the first world war, and design really seemed to grow around this time period. The hint of colors on the third object seems to be Aicher exploring new design expectations because everything else is in black and white.
