Drawing, Stage Design: Backdrop for Checkmate

06/19/2023 (Post 2)

My second post of the day involves another poster created by Edward Mcknight Kauffer called Drawing, Stage Design: Backdrop for Checkmate. This poster design is an example of Early Modernism because of the exclusive use of shape, line, and color to create a vibrant poster.

This poster is important for Early Modernism because of the idea that geometric shapes take the entire poster to heart, there is no typography involved whatsoever which is unique considering most designs include some sort of type. Being that the background is a gradient of colors is also another unique characteristic about this poster. While there are new ideas being involved during this time period (at the time the poster was created, which was in the 1940s) Kauffer broke the original "rules" to create something that stands out against others.
