Die Neue Typographie
For my first blog post, I decided to research the design titled Die Neue Typographie, created by Jan Tschichold. He explored different techniques to find what was proper for his designs like using the grid system.
The example above is a book cover for Tschichold's book titled Die Neue Typographie (translated: The New Typography). This cover was created in 1928. The book cover's design demonstrates Early Modern Design because of the use of geometric shapes and the use of sans-serif typography, which was something that Tschichold did regularly with his designs at the time. The bold color (orange) is able to guide the viewer to the important pieces of information about the book. For me, my eye directs my attention to "die neue typographie" in orange, as well as the orange box in the lower right-hand corner.
This design in particular is important to Early Modernism because of the very minimalistic, organized, and uniform approach in terms of design to give the audience a bigger picture of the final outlook, which was for people to purchase his book (this is what I appreciate the most from this design). He uses typography that is all part of the same family and is able to emphasize important pieces of information by either putting the words in bold, in another color, or both. Also, his use of including only lowercase letters also gives a sense of unity and organization.
